Major Competition Formats
Ladies Competitions
The format of all Ladies competitions are as follows, Coronation Foursomes, foursomes. John Betts, bogey. Rose Bowl, medal. Lady Captains Stableford, stableford. Charles Cooke Salver, medal. Bell & Kings, pairs. Lady Captains Cup, medal. R M Decor, stableford. Swift Family Salver, bogey. Beryl Rigby, medal.
Captain’s Drive In
Shotgun start, individual Stableford, full handicap open to all members. This “fun” event is designed to introduce the incoming Club Captain and Lady Captain. After the competition has finished both Captains tee off to inaugurate their year in office.
Men’s Winter League Final
This event takes place after the last match in the league has been completed. The final is a Better-Ball medal played between the winners of each division, or top two in each league if there are above 12 in the league. The best score on the day will be crowned the Winter League Winners and go on to represent the club in “The Mail on Sunday.”
Gatensbury Rosebowl
Singles medal, full handicap, Green Blazer qualifier.
May Greensome Cup
Pairs medal competition. Both players drive off, select the best drive and then play alternate shots. 3/8 combined handicap.
Ken Horton Trophy
Better-Ball Medal, handicap limit 28 with ¾ stroke allocation. Play in a Four-Ball in teams of two with the lowest net score on each hole from the pairing being recorded on the card.
John Betts Bogey
Bogey Competition handicap limit 28 full stroke allowance, “you against the course”. This is where a plus, minus or half is awarded depending on whether you play the hole under, over, or level par. Green Blazer qualifier.
Club Championship
Individual medal event played over 36 holes over weekend, 18 holes each day as a gross competition. The lowest 36-hole total will be crowned champion golfer of the year. No handicap restriction. There is also a net prize. Winner qualifies for “The Mail on Sunday” competition
Captains Day
The biggest event of the golfing year. Support your Club Captain in their day of golf, fun and entertainment. Open to all members, individual competition, format decided by the Captain, with a special Captains prize, plus many spot prizes. Evening prize presentation with food and entertainment. Tee times can be pre-booked.
Singles Knockout
Open to all members with a current handicap. Played as a singles knockout through the summer season, full handicap difference from the white tees. The winner will be matchplay champion of the year. Winner qualifies for “The Mail on Sunday” competition
Doubles Knockout
Open to all members with a current handicap. Foursomes Knockout, which is alternate shots, played during the summer months. Matchplay knockout which is 3/8 of the combined difference, played from the white tees. Winners qualify for “The Daily Mail” foursomes.
Rabbit & Rollosons Trophy’s
18 holes individual medal, handicaps 0-14 play the Rollasons and 15-28 play the Rabbits.
Cannon Sports Greensomes
Pairs competition Greensomes format, 3/8 combined handicap, Stableford. Sponsored by Malcolm Cannon.
Vice Captains Trophy
Individual Stableford full handicap allowance. Green Blazer qualifier. First prize provided by Vice Captain.
Mixed Greensomes Cup
Mixed teams, one lady, one man, pairs Stableford competition. Both players drive off, select best drive then take alternate shot’s from then. Handicap 3/8 of combined.
Captain V Vice Captain
A good old fashion match play team event. Put your name on the list, a draw will be made and let battle commence. Lots of fun and lots of banter.
Purley Chase Ryder Cup
Played over two days in the true Ryder Cup tradition, England V The Rest. Fourball match play on the Saturday. Singles matches played on the Sunday, followed by the presentation, photographs and much celebration. So if your English or one of “The Rest” don’t miss this event.
Presidents Trophy
Individual medal competition, full handicap, Green Blazer qualifier.
Bronze Medal
Individual medal competition, full handicap, Green Blazer qualifier.
Autumn Trophy
Individual Stableford, full handicap allowance. This is also the last Green Blazer qualifier, so if you are in contention its one you cannot miss.
Members Day
A fun competition open to ALL members both 5 & 7 day, stableford full handicap, within the entry fee is an element for a light meal at the end of play. Separate competitions for men lady members but joint “2’s club.
Medal Winners Final
All medal winners during the year, including Mid Week, whether or not 5-day members, qualify for the final. So please don’t forget that if you win a medal you also have a final medal to play for. Winner qualifies for “The Mail on Sunday” competition
Past Captain Competition
The Captains of the Club past and present are invited to place a team to contest, AM/AM format competition, followed by a lunch/evening meal. Organised by the immediate past Captain.
Turkey Trot
A great opportunity to stock up for Christmas. Played as a separate event over 2 days, so you have two chances of winning. Pairs Stableford competition, play individually then add your total to your partners total to give team score. Prizes Turkey, ham etc.
Christmas Cracker
“Fun” event played each December, full handicap individual Stableford. Open to all 5 & 7 days members, men ladies &
Juniors. Five top prizes all have Christmas theme. Played off yellow & red tees.
Hangover Competition
Individual Stableford competition played in teams of ten, with the two worst scores being discounted to obtain team total. Shotgun start with a chance to walk off the Christmas indulgence, good atmosphere in the lounge as the team scores are added up to decide the winners.
Memorial Trophy
A chance to remember members, who are no longer with us, played on Remembrance Sunday. Individual stableford full handicap, gather in the clubhouse afterwards and toast to “absent friends”
The Green Blazer
This prestigious event is designed to find the most consistent player over the 10 majors played in the golfing season. Points awarded to the top 20 players in each major, 20 for first down to 1 for twentieth. The highest accumulation of points wins the Green Blazer. Winner qualifies for “The Mail on Sunday” competition
Hexagon Trophy
Team event with the internal societies battling against each other. Grasshoppers, G &T’s, Fines, Spike Bar, PIGS, Captains Select, Dads Army, Timms’s Tigers. Shotgun start, 10 players per team.
Stableford individual scores, full handicap. Fourballs, drawn from hat with different team players. 8 scores from each team count.
Mail On Sunday, National Competition.
Team of six to represent the club, qualifiers, Club Champion, Green Blazer winner, Winter League Final Winners, Final Medal Winner & Singles Knockout Winner. Captain of the team to be decided by committee.
Daily Mail Foursomes, National Competition.
Pairs event club represented by the winners of the Doubles Knockout.
Social Events
The Club has a very active social committee that arranges events that hopefully meets everyone’s budgets and interests. Please look on the notice board to see what’s on. The diary of events are planned to supplement the key social events which are.
